Each embroidery series is informed by extensive research on the tradition of Nushu,
an ancient coded Chinese writing system. Some characters imitate Hanzi script, others are based on embroidery designs and stitches. It was written by women to communicate secretly with other women in the embroidery rooms where they worked together making lotus shoes for bound feet.
